In collaboration with the Department of Equine Science at Utrecht University, we created an automated hoofshoe modeling tool usable by farriers for creating 3D-printable hoofshoes to provide personalized hoof care. With advancements in 3D printing, farriers have the chance to create hoofshoes tailored to each horse's unique needs. However, the traditional method of manually designing these hoofshoes is time-consuming and requires expertise in computer-aided design software which few farriers have. The image below shows a hoofshoe that we 3D printed.

To make this process easier for farriers, we've developed a user-friendly tool that automates the design of these hoofshoes. This tool simplifies the process by using intuitive parameters to customize the hoofshoe, allowing for adjustments to support orthopedic care. By utilizing 3D scanning technology with precise measurements, we can ensure a perfect fit around the horse's hoof. The image below shows us using a 3D scanner to create a digital representation of a hoof.

Our work shows that these personalized hoofshoes offer several benefits over traditional horseshoes. They do not require nails for attachment, which can damage the hoof, and allow the hoof to maintain its natural flexibility. Additionally, they can incorporate multiple modifications to support orthopedic care needs.
Furthermore, we have treated two patients, having hoof-related problems, using the technology we developed. This real-world application shows the effectiveness and practicality of our innovative approach to providing hoof care. The image below shows a 3D printed hoofshoe attached to the hoof of the first patient that we treated.

Moreover, we've compared the quality of hoof scans from several handheld 3D scanners to ensure the best fit for the hoofshoes. Our work aims to revolutionize hoof care by combining cutting-edge technology with farriers' expertise to improve horses' comfort and health.

We developed the tool as an add-on for Blender, which is an open-source 3D modeling solution. The demo video below shows a quick walkthrough of the modeling steps, from importing a hoof scan to finishing the first hoofshoe model.
